Phone booth cramming (aka; packing, jamming, stuffing, etc.) was an extremely popular fad that hit the United States hard in 1959. It began when a South African College set a world record by cramming 25 students into a booth. The fad hit London then finally the U.S. and Canada. Booth Stuffing competitions were the rage and colleges quite often competed against one another. Rules changed often and adding a twist was common such as placing a phone call while crammed in the booth, etc. Go here for more!
