In 1937, Nanking stands at the forefront of a war between China and Japan. As the invading Japanese Imperial Army overruns China’s capital city, desperate civilians seek refuge behind the nominally protective walls of a western cathedral. Here, John Miller (Christian Bale), an American trapped amidst the chaos of battle and the ensuing occupation takes shelter, joined by a group of innocent schoolgirls and thirteen courtesans, equally determined to escape the horrors taking place outside the church walls. Struggling to survive the violence and persecution wrought by the Japanese army, it is an act of heroism which eventually leads the seemingly disparate group to fight back, risking their lives for the sake of everyone

You have to watch it. The women are not only breathtakingly beautiful but their acting alone is worthy of your attention. The school girls are phenomenal as well. It’s not for the faint of heart, lots of killing and blood shed and like i said above, its a slow start. Give it a try though.

Okay, I don’t give an actual fuck about what Christian Bale was doing here, because this movie was so, so good.

Remember when I was worried it would be propaganda and would unfairly dwell on some white guy?  Yeah, no.  Christian Bale’s character was necessary—the Japanese would have believed a Western priest over a Chinese priest I’m sure, and there were a lot of Westerners in China then—but dang, these woman.  Most of them are pretty inexperience actresses, and they were so fucking brilliant.

I never get tired of watching films about this era even though they’re horrifically brutal.  So beware OP’s warning—this film is graphic.  You think Django is bad?  At least women aren’t being tied to chairs, raped, and then bayonnetted in Django.  Nor were there schoolgirls being thrown from high balconies.  In other words, if you have a weak stomach… maybe don’t watch this. But everyone else, you really, really should, even if it doesn’t seem like your cup of tea.

This movie is unexpectedly very frightening, but kind of good.

I had my reservations about Christian Bale this movie, but if Brain Food recommends it…

Okay, this movie is weirdly really good?  It’s a made-for-TV mystery, but it’s actually… quality.  Also, Mary McDonnell and David Strathairn? Yes and yes.

The Warrior’s Way

Dang, but this movie is excellent.  It’s (get ready for it) an almost artsy samurai-Western hybrid.

Yes.

Yes really.

Hot damn.

The plot focuses on two people in a small, remote village: Temelko and Aya. They have been in love since they were four years old, and they are finally about to consummate their relationship. Aya’s grandmother, a reader of the stars, has told them the perfect night for their first time will occur when Virgo and Sagittarius are aligned. However, at the same time, the long pipe that provides water to the village stops working. Aya decides that she will not have sex with Temelko until the whole village has water. The other women of the village join in this strike. Lulz ensue.

For being pretty ridiculous and a little bawdy, the movie was pretty cute. I really liked it. If you have Netflix, it’s on the instant stream!

this movie is pretty sweet so far.  also the score is by shigeru umebayashi so you know, you should probably watch it
