Um … no.
I never write without headphones on, because it’s the music that ALLOWS me to escape into flights of fancy and think of new ideas. I do my best thinking while listening to music. It’s silence, or the chaotic buzz of the outside world, that kills all creativity and thought with me. That makes me focus on trivial things or my next obligation to the exclusion of all else.
Also, I find it a bit egocentric how people always assumes that “real life” exists only when people are paying attention to them. Maybe I don’t WANT to talk to you. That doesn’t mean I’m hiding in a fantasy world, it means I’m just not interested in you. Deal with it and stop whining! Stop proclaiming that people are somehow not alive if they have better things to do than chat with you about their lives or politics or which celebrity is cheating on whom.
Believe it or not, people are not always a good thing. They can be selfish, inconsiderate, panicky, violent, arrogant, or just plain stupid. I fail to see how my life is enriched by the pointless banalities that pass for conversation. I have enough to deal with as it is without having to pretend to care about what you have to say. If that hurts people’s pride, then tough.
That I choose not to be bothered does not mean that my life is somehow less valuable or less fulfilling. I’m satisfied as is, thank you very much.
